Salvadorian wild orchids? Male
Default Salvadorian wild orchids?

Can anyone direct me to some information of which species are found in El Salvador? I'm living in El Salvador until August and already I've found a bunch of Encyclias, some Oncidiums, and some Cattleyas. None are in bloom though and I'd like to get more information about which species can be found here.

Don't know if it will be much help, but you can get a pretty good list (about 400 species) by searching Kew for family Orchidaceae and country code El Salvador. They show 111 genera, with the largest number of species being in Epidendrum (38), Stelis (19), Prosthechea (17), Malaxis (14), Lepanthes (13), and Oncidium (13).

Good luck. Hope you'll share some photos.

Steve

Thanks! That's helpful, yet I still think there are species not listed there. But it's a start!

I used the "Advanced Search" feature of the World Checklist of Selected Plant Families, at this link:

World Checklist of Selected Plant Families: Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew

in the "Family" field I put "Orchidaceae", and in the "Select a TDWG distribution level and code" field clicked "Botanical Country" and selected "El Salvador" from the drop-down list. That produces the 400-odd names. I ran that list through a couple of macros I already had to produce the statistics by genus.

There is also a "Build a Checklist" page which you can use to create a very nice report, with varying amounts of data here:

World Checklist of Selected Plant Families: Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew

If you selected the detailed checklist, it includes synonyms, publications, and sometimes information like "epiphyte" or "pseudobulb epiphyte".

(Those two links look the same in this post, but they really do go to different pages within the WCSP.)

Hope this helps,

Steve
