Default Calypso bulbosa!

Well, I was enjoying the afternoon in a quite house, so I got into a creative mood and decided to write something on my blog using some old pictures I took on my phone. I have been tempted to delete the pictures off of my phone several times in the past thinking I would never use them. Well, now that I have Blogger mobile, I can put some of these pictures to good use! So, I made a little post talking about my first time seeing a wild orchid here in Canada, with pictures that I took of them, of course. I'm really glad I didn't delete them. Some random pictures. I hope you enjoy!

These are my favourite orchids period. Did you notice the awesome kinda artificial grape scent they give off? I have a lovely patch of these as well as a large pot that have been thriving for years, after I was forced to write letters of anguish to the Alberta government regarding a subdivision and lease development that completely demolished the patch that lay on crown land just beyond my property line,(therefore I was given permission to move them as well as a few other native plants. I DO NOT support poaching).

Luckily the patch that I transplanted has 10x from the original 15 or so plants I was able to move. I have always wondered how easy these would be to propagate. My potted ones are just loaded with seed pods every year, and seem to self seed sufficiently. I'm not sure If its legal to harvest any seeds and send them out, but if I was any good with propagation I would give it a try. Sorry...I'm rambling...Just love this plant so much!!

I see the variety of Calypso orchids native to Northern California growing up in the hills of coastal Sonoma county. I remember being so surprised to see them when I was driving that I had to turn around and go look to make sure my eyes were not deceiving me. The ones here seem to need really deep "duff," the debris from redwoods as it piles up over the years. I want to see the native cypripediums this year. There's something arresting about seeing orchids growing in the wild here, something nearly sacred. In same areas there are huge patches of trillium, too, another plant that I never tire of seeing.
