oh wow - I love the striped one! I have spotted some type of similar orchid at a park near me - Have meant to go back with a camera at the appropriate time of year, but the ticks in that park just have kept me away

Be nice to find out what it is, but the ticks would keep me away, too. A friend in the Atlanta area has just been bitten and gotten Lyme disease.

Yeah - it's funny, at the entrance to this park, they have info and warnings and what to do if you encounter mountain lions and coyotes, as well as tick info - honestly - I'm much more concerned about the ticks! It's fine if you stay on the trail, but you don't find the orchids that way. Last time I was there, was the last time I was there because I found lots of ticks on my dog afterwards. That was during a mild but wet winter. With the mild winter we just had, I would think there's a good chance there's lots of ticks.

So, just going on my memory, and looking up at what orchids might be found in the area, I'm pretty sure it was Spotted Coralroot

Hope your friend will be ok

The Spotted Coralroot is probably the most common of them all.

Yeah, looking up what orchids grow here, I see that they are quite common. I was excited to see it tho - I didn't know at the time that there were any orchids that grew in the area. I just spotted wildflowers that looked unusual to me, and went and had a closer look, and thought that the blooms looked very orchid like, so looked online later.
