Eifel Germany part 4: Orchis Male
Default Eifel Germany part 4: Orchis

We found 2 different Orchis species on the alcareous grasslands close to trees and shrubs. Many Orchis resemble the human form and have names in latin and other languages to resemble this.

Orchis anthropophora synonym Aceras anthrophophorum Man Orchid in Dutch it would the name is doll orchid. Again this change is not completly accepted.

Orchis mascula
early purple orchid

Really cool.

Orchis simia is known as the Monkey Orchid in the UK and is very similar looking to Orchis anthropophora. I find these such cute little ones with the little Man/Monkey shape.

Love the purples of the others as well. Really nice!

Beautiful, and great pics! In france we know the first one as the 'homme pendu', or the hangman orchid. I've only seen this one once in the wild. Love the O. mascula, i missed them in this year. Spring was so warm that they bloomed mid april, a month earlier than usual! By the time I got there it was a field of seed pods.
