Epidendrum strobiliferum
Default Epidendrum strobiliferum

I went out to Fakahatchee on Sunday with some friends to do some looking
around at a "new area". We found 6 new ghost orchids, But the highlight of the day was this Epidendrum strobiliferum, or " Cone Bearing Epidendrum. "

It's an incredibly small orchid as an individual, but the colony itself was really large and healthy. We counted 13 seed pods growing on the main cluster, and an additional 7 pods on two neighboring groups of growth.

A really gorgeous little orchid....and one of the more endangered in the swamp.

Epidendrum strobiliferum

" Cone Bearing Orchid ", " Pine Cone Orchid ", " Big Cypress Star Orchid "

It's got some seed capsules.

Ever consider collecting the seeds for micropropagation, since they're endangered?

Each capsule may not contain many seeds, but I'm sure someone is willing to do something with them.

I sent some seeds of Jacquineilla leucomelana to a lab to be sown and got some seedlings out of that attempt. The pods on Jacquiniella look like they're either much smaller or just about as big as the ones on the Epidendrum in your pics.

Considering that they are endangered and listed as CITES Appendix I, and in a state preserve....no I've not considered it.

If I could legally help the park biologists with culturing seeds for propagation I'm all about it. I learned how to breed orchids years ago and I'm friends with the park staff so who knows what the future holds, but until then all that I'd consider taking are pics.

Nice find. Could repost the photos so they are not so big? I would like to look at the whole plant. Here's a helpful program that will resize them quick and easy. Thanks.

I'll repost them as a smaller file. I can put em up as big or small as you want ;-)
