Easter Weekend in the Appalachians
Hi all,
I spent the weekend at the house of a friend who lives in the Stix of North Carolina. His elevation is 3,000 feet or so. His backyard is 5.5 acres of Appalachian forest. VERY NICE. Thank goodness he is a conservationist!
I will be posting pics of all the cool spring flowers we encountered down there, but for now you will have to be content with the orchid I found. 2 in bloom, 1 not, 1 in fruit (from last year I presume).
1) Habenaria viridis var. bracteata
Apparently a very rare orchid, and only found 3 individuals of this species on his property.
2)Close up of the orchid. It is called the long bracted frog orchid.
3) Amplectrum hyemale, found about 10 or so individuals
4) Amplectrum hyemale with fruit.
5)Galearis spectabilis this is the showy orchis, very very common, it was all over the place.
6) close up of G. spectabilis.
7) Goodyera pubescens tons of these, probably the most common. This blooms in July in that area.

Excellent! Love the jewel orchids. Isn't it a blast finding orchids in the wild? Anywhere near Nantahala?

Nice, thanks for posting these, Tindo! I love seeing Goodyeras in the woods around here. Never run into that Habenaria, though, great find!

Awesome pictures! They make me homesick -- I backpack all over the place up there and it's beautiful. I miss it! Thank you for posting these!

Wow, thanks all for all the responses! The location is in Madison County NC. I don't know where Nantahala is.

Madison County is north of Buncombe, where I live. The Nantahala River and Gorge area is SW of Buncombe, a lot of it in Jackson, Swain, and Macon counties. All these areas are extremely beautiful, IMO.
