I understand Ross I didn't want members to get the wrong idea. I know alot of people will be here for the Show in April That would be a great time to see the Glades, the weather is dry and cool and the bugs are almost nonexistant. So keep me in mind maybe we could get a small group together.

I hear ya! I just think there may be some folks (maybe not

) that might think they could come down there now (in summer) and see the ellusive Ghost Orchid, since Dave knows where it's at

and not be prepared for the environment. April is very nice, but not so much available orchid-wise. Air plants, yes.

Because of the subtropical atmosphere our orchids bloom all times of the year and the plants are there all year long! I have seen butterfly orchids Encyclia tempensis bloom pretty much every month of the year.

Don't have to warn me I lived on the river , mosquitoes like vampires swarms of them , off the scale humidity ,very little air flow , ticks, chiggers , deer flies , and assorted snakes , copper heads , water snakes , timber rattlers , I forgot spiders .

I've always wondered if people in florida could create a back yard habitat simulating naturally occuring plant life. Maybe Sue, you could grow a native Ghost Orchid(if they are available in the market) in your back yard and in so doing help expand the population. Or perhaps the conditions are just not the same in your yard as where they are found naturally.

Tindo I thought the same thing about how many people that are able to watch this very elusive orchid, knowing that probably only 3 people have ever seen this in person. If it wasn't for the OB I would not have a place to share this amazing little plant/flower. I do have a ghost orchid in my collection and it is doing OK. (not great)

It came from ebay. I think it needs the fugus that lives in the glades to really do well. It takes about 5 years to flower (if you can get it to live that long). Even in the wild according to things I have read that not all of them do, only a small amount actually flower. I feel very privileged to find one that is in spike. I have been hiking the Florida Everglades for over 10 years and now only know of 6 ghost orchids and this one is the only one in spike. Can't wait till the weekend to get here so I can check it out. it should open soon
