I found this plant attached to a rotted log, by some trees at work. After browsing the forum, I find there's a lot of wild orchids here in FL and I'm wondering if that's not what it is. Any ideas?

Encyclia tempensis. They grow in most of the state and prefer to be left alone. What I mean is just let it grow don't water or fertilize it. This what the flower looks like and it smells divine.

Thanks so much for the info. What type of light should it get? I seem to kill my orchids all the time and I almost feel sorry for this one that I found it. lol

Well you have the right kind or orchid to learn with. It doesn't really matter with these. I've seen them in full sun and mostly shaded. VERY hearty. Well to the board and theirs ton's of information here to help you.

Thanks flhiker. I have been browsing and I did see lots of info I never knew and lots of wonderful people helping. I have a dendrobium that I've somehow managed not to kill and now I'm getting the itch to get more.

Thanks Joann and Paul! I just moved from MI to FL and I'm hoping to have better luck with orchids here. I've always had the phalaenopsis but I always ended up killing them. I'm sure between this forum and Florida's nice weather, I might get one to survive for a change!

Welcome to OB and Florida. Where in Florida are you? I moved here from PA 6 1/2 years ago and after getting 1 phal & 1 den the first year and having them rebloom the second year I was hooked. I never looked back. My collection always seems to have room for one more. There are many orchids shows and nurseries in South Florida and I found my 'Wish List" growing just looking at the OB gallery.
