Could someone please help me out?

I am trying to find what species of orchid are native to guatemala and honduras. To be even more specific the Motagua river basin.

Does anyone have any info on what orchids are native to this region?

Thank you!

Wow...

Most Central American orchids are rare! They normally don't get imported to the US often.

Occasionally you'll find Panamanian species, and more often than not, you'll find species from Mexico. But stuff from Nicaragua or Honduras are pretty difficult to come by.

hmmm, how would I go about trying to find them?

Are there any specific species you can list for me?

What are some of the more common panamanian and mexican species?

Heres what I have found so far on my own.

Cypripedium irapeanum is native through mexico to honduras

Cypripedium dickinsonianum is native through mexico to guatemala

Phragmipedium exstaminodium is native through mexico to guatemala

**Edit**

Also, Phragmipedium caudatum is native to guatemala
(Varients of this species aren't hybrids right? Just different collection points?)

Probably the most complete is Orchids of Guatemala and Belize by Oakes Ames and Donvoan Correll - the first two volumes are Guatemala. Ames also wrote a very hard to find treatise on the orchids of Honduras published in parts.

Variants are not hybrids. But if two variants of the same species are bred together, that is technically a hybrid.

Variants may be color variants or variants from different localities.

Isochilus spp. are found from Central America down to South America.

Those Cyps are difficult to come by. I don't know anyone who carries them.

Mexipedium xerographicum is from Mexico.

But other than the Phrag you posted, I'm not aware of what others may be from that general area.

There are a few Pleurothallids from those areas too (Lepanthes, Pleurothallis, etc) - particularly from Panama. I believe Plths (Ancipitia) eumecocalon and Plths (Ancipitia) crocodiliceps are from that area. There might be many others.

Not sure whether you are still looking, but I live in Guatemala and can certainly provide you with a list of orchids indigenous to different areas in Guate.

Exporting them is a different matter of course...

Rober Fuchs used to carry a lot of epidendrum-encyclias and cats like Skinneri and Dowiana and some oncidiums from down this way. Shoot him an email .
