Lady Slipper EXPLOSION!
I had the most amazing afternoon. I went on a nature walk in the park behind my house (less than 2 blocks away) and the entire forest was dotted with bright pink lady slippers.
I was in complete awe - they were everywhere - some in great big bunches where dozens would be growing together. I had no idea that there were paphs in the wild in this part of New England. It took every ounce of self control not to take one or ten of them home with me.
I am terrible with a camera - but I snapped a few fotos (below) so that I could share with the group. I hope you enjoy...

very nice, but they're not Paphs. they're Cypripedium acaule.
and it's a good thing you didn't take any home - they're notoriously hard to keep alive. they're also listed as endangered in many areas, and in most places it is a felony to collect any kind of plant from public property.

Nice. Cypripedium acaule. Are they still "lady slippers"? Or is that name reserved exclusively for paphs?
Thanks!

Wasn't it the most awesome feeling when you stumbled upon these so close to home?
I'm in New England too and had a similar experience a few years ago driving out to the Cape, its something I'll never forget. Just wish I had had my camera with me at the time.

Cypripediums were called ladyslippers long before anyone who spoke English had ever even seen a Paphiopedilum.
