It has been awhile since I visited the site. While doing a plant survey in Hernando County Fl for other plants for a park list Phaius tankervilliae was relocated in Hernando County Fl. from 20+ years ago when I first saw the plants. The only other location of this plant in Fl is Hardee County however from what I understand these plants cannot be located.
Dr. Pemberton and I went out today to collect samples and to photo the plants for his studies. The plants are seeding the general area as is evident by some of the photos. We have seedling plants and flowering plants as shown in the attached photos. Continuing surveys of the area will reveal how extensive the plants are. It appears that the plants are limited at this time to an area of about 10 acres total in a Hydric Hammock. This may change with further field work.
Wonderful pics Don. I love seeing these things in the wild.
I've merged your last pic in the same thread as it lets you put more attachements in to later posts in the same thread (you need to choose the 'Go Advanced' option when posting a reply to the thread).
Most of the wild orchids are usually out in the middle of no where here in Florida. Especially the swamps and hammocks. Most people don't dare go into those areas.
