Yes, I used my macro lens for most of those super-closeups. It is invaluable for getting those microscopic things in the frame.
The flash was used in one of several situations:
1. the light was too low to get a good photo at all under natural conditions.
2. the conditions for getting a nice, diffusely lit photo required the use of a flash and a diffuser. Many of the wet-meadow orchids are in bright sunlight, but that gives them very contrasty light, yet the constant breeze makes it impossible to keep them still enough for the sunlight through the diffuser to be sufficient.
