I am concerned about a particular ghost orchid, the multiple blooming plant at Blair Audubon Corkscrew Swamp Sanctuary that first bloomed in 2007 and each subsequent year through 2009. This exquisite flower inspired the novel Ghost Orchid by D. K. Christi. Celebrating Valentine's Day, numbers one through nine will appear along the boardwalk at Corkscrew so readers can experience the exquisite views shared by the characters in the novel - all but the magnificent ghost orchid that won't bloom until late June or early July. Yet, Ghost Orchidreaders can still enjoy the peace and serenity that only a walk in the Everglades can generate and the expectation of the orchid to come.

The beauty of Corkscrew is its complete accessibility to all who wander there, including those in wheelchairs. Saturday, February 13 at Noon, D. K. Christi will be signing copies of Ghost Orchid and passing out the guide sheet to the numbered stops on the already magnificent walk. Many wintering birds already greet the visitors; add a mystery unfolding in search of the special views sited in Ghost Orchid and those sited but not numbered, including the location of the ghost orchid yet to bloom. Hi and welcome to the Orchid Board. I don't know for sure but I think it survived the cold with know problems. As I already mentioned even the smallest seedlings I checked out are doing great. I agree this is a great place for some people to see a very special orchid. But you can only see it thru a spotting scope. As it's high in the tree and you can't leave the boardwalk. I was very fortunate to see this plant 3 day's after it being discovered, when it had 13 flowers. Amazing. Good luck with your signing

I am obsessed with this orchid. I viewed it from its first blooming in July 2007 (my birthday is July 10) through its three months of two additional bloomings each year through 2009. I must say I lost count of the blooms but had seen it often enough through the scope that I trained my excellent sight to see it up there in the canopy. The sheer number of blooms makes up for not being able to stand right next to it. I hope you get a chance to stop by my signing Saturday, February 13 at Corkscrew Swamp Sanctuary at noon to compare notes between seeing one close up in the wild with only a few blooms and seeing a profusion of blooms in the canopy through a scope :-) I hope you are correct and it will again bloom this summer - it is the "heart and soul" of my novel, Ghost Orchid, according to NPR.

I'm guessing that the ghost orchids, being flat against their host trees, were probably protected by the warmth of the trees. Trees themselves are, for all intents and purposes, a vertical body of water, so they probably have some ability to stay warmer than the surrounding air.

Hi Camille,

I had the opportunity a couple of weeks ago to check on a very large concentration of Ghosts not far outside the Strand. I am happy to report that the majority appeared to have come through the freeze with no visible signs of burning, yellowing, or browning.

My host that day, who discovered this particular concentration, felt that it was very fortunate that there was still so much water in the slough. This he thinks is what brought the Ghosts through the worst of it without significant damage.

Hopefully the Ghosts in the Strand will come through just as well!
