Very Rare Whirled Pogonia
I was looking through old photos when I came across these two, not the best I've ever taken, but this species is rarely seen. The whorled pogonia, Isotria verticillata, is threatened or endangered throughout its range. This plant, I believe, was found in the Blue Hills Reservation which is comprised of 7,000 acres from Quincy to Dedham and Milton to Randolph Massachusetts.

Yes, Ron, you are correct it is the Whorled Pogonia or I've heard it referred to as the Greater or Large Whorled Pogonia. I guess I was in a "whirl" when I posted this. I've only seen it the one time years ago when several of us went wild orchid hunting with Paul Martin Brown, who was a member of the Massachusetts Orchid Society at the time.

That's so very neat! I like your older orchid photos! I wonder how many of the places you've photographed still have intact orchid populations. Keep posting your photos!  |

I don't know Anthony as these photos are really "old" - maybe more than 20 years. At present I'm trying to find out if that bog in Quechee, VT, where I photographed the Cyp. reginae, still exists, by emailing someone in the local garden club there - who knows if I'll receive a reply. By poking around the internet I've found some potential sites of wild orchids in Vermont, so hopefully I can check these out next year. If any Orchid Board members know of sites in the MA/NH/VT/Maine area, please send me a message. |

Some years ago, near Williamsburg, VA, a stand of Small Whorled Pogonia actually blocked construction of a highway.

Oh, that's really neat! I know around my neck of the woods, Cypripedium candidum habitat is a major topic in a highway bridge debate
