Default New to Board

Hi all

New to board. I am from west central Florida. Anyone on here from Florida? ( I am sure there is )

I am preparing to do a county wide survey for all rare, threatened and endangered animals and plants. Of course orchids, bromeliads, carnivorous plants and other rarities will be looked for. I know or knew where many species of orchids have been in the past and hopefully they are still in the right spots. Due to the droughts, development, overpumping of groundwater and hogs out of control orchids and carnivorous plants are in dire straights in this part of Florida. So...I will hopefully become a part of this group and let you know what I find!

I am also plunging into the raising of these plants as well but have work to do before I get started down that road (greenhouse must be built, equipment for agar prep, storage for seeds, stocking of flask/jars,etc...)

Wish me luck.

Don

Hi Don, Welcome to the board. I live in the SE but frequent the Everglades. I've had the pleasure of finding many endangered orchids and look forward to hearing of your finds. Good luck with your project and we love pictures here.

"Shaking hands"...you and I are very close locally...I live on the Pasco County side of Spring Hill!

Joann, Shirley, and Roly0217
Thanks for the welcome

Dave
Thanks as well and while "lurking" before I joined I drooled over you, Prems, and others photos. As soon as I figure the "how toos" and the "ins and outs" of this board, I will be posting photos as I am able to get them. Any tips? (for posting photos)

I am leaving tonight for a much needed vacation. The family and I are heading to (my favorite state)Tennessee. We will be staying at Norris Dam State Park this trip and spend some time with relatives in Maryville and enjoy the mountains. I doubt any orchids will be showing themselves at this time of the year maybe Goodyera and Tipularia.

I will post my finds when I get back.

Happy Thanksgiving too all!

Don

Welcome Don

I'm on the south east coast in Boca Raton. We all love to see pictures of fellow growers. I also lurked and drooled over pictures posted before joining a couple years ago. I have gained so much information being part of OB and created a much bigger "Wish List" Thanks guys.

Default Back from Trip

Hi all

Back from the Tn Thanksgiving vacation. Was enjoyable but as usual too fast! And the trip back is always hell!

Only orchid seen was Goodyera pubescens as anticipated. No Tipularia, looked all over the hill at the farm where I had seen a large colony before and nothing.

Found many wild ginger in leaf in the park everything else seemed to be ready for a long winters nap! We did see 7 bears in Cades Cove more than I have seen in the Smokeys at one time. One mother had 4 cubs!

Thanks for the tips guys and as soon as I can take good photos I will post them. I have a new Sony pocket camera that is not as good as my old digital. Still learning how to use it. Oh to have about a grand for a good digital SLR!

Don
