Connie,
Rosie is correct that there are two varieties and while their ranges overlap, var. americana has a much broader range. It ranges west to east from Alaska to Newfoundland and south from there into the Rockies, the upper Great Lakes and northern New England. Var. occidentalis is found only in the Cascades and to the west of the Cascades as far south as central California, in Alaska, Idaho and Montana in the USA and in British Columbia in Canada - very much a western variety. It might interest you to know that there are two other varieties, one from Eurasia and one from Japan.
