We have been on vacation in Canada including a week of backpacking in the Canadian Rockies, in Mount Robson Provincial Park. The backpacking was fabulous and we saw and identified at least ten different species of orchids. We saw our first orchids on our way up through British Columbia on Highway 5. This was one of those first sightings, the Tall White Bog Orchid, Platanthera dilatata var. dilatata. We saw them by the thousands growing in the wetter areas along the west side of the road north of Clearwater and the North Thompson Provincial Park, often side-by-side with another Platanthera species which I'll post tomorrow. We also discovered that this orchid is very fragrant, with a spicy order that is quite strong.
