Amerorchis Rotundifolia has got to be one of my favourite native species in Alberta, just below
Calypso Bulbosa. I have had this plant for about 3 years but it has had a ruff start this year the flowers are a lot smaller then usual, but still as beautiful.
I gathered this plant from the evergreen forest behind my house the same time I got my Calypso Bulbosa, before the loggers came in and destroyed the entire area. Luckily this plant is very easy to cultivate and I have replanted a lot of side growths back into the wild in the area close to my house where they seem to be growing well no flowers from them yet.
Flower is approx half an inch across but over the years have had them at almost an inch. Slight Floral scent in the morning, but nothing to get excited about really.
Not the best picture I will post more and some whole plant shots, when I get up in the morning when i can get some better natural lighting and some fresh batteries for my camera. ENJOY!!
I cannot stress enough that I do not support the wild collection of native plants let they be orchids or not. The few native species I have in my collection were taken legally through a request to the Government of Canada and in response to the destruction of their natural habitat. Native plants belong in the wild. All the plants I have collected I have cultivated and re-introduced into the wild to ensure their continued existence for generations to come.
Update: Just noticed my rare Platanthera Orbiculata is in spike as well !!!!! Keep an eye out you don't want to miss that one will post as soon as the buds open.
