This is out of today's paper. Very sad story for 1400 Wild Chids
Man admits to smuggling wild orchids
The Associated Press
August 13, 2008
MIAMI - A Florida orchid seller admitted in federal court that he illegally smuggled wild orchids out of the Philippines. Fort Lauderdale businessman .........pleaded guilty Tuesday to smuggling about 1,400 orchids into Miami International Airport in 2005. The violation of federal environmental laws carries a five-year maximum prison sentence and fines. ........ admitted that he claimed in papers that the orchids were grown artificially. In fact, they were collected in the wild in the Philippines by a ........ relative and shipped to him. Wild orchids are protected under an international endangered species treaty.

Despite justice being served, it doesn't replace the 1400 orchids he harvested from the wild ..
What the heck is wrong with people
His sentence should include replanting, maintaining and protecting them in the wild
and giving educational talks about discouraging this type of terrible and intolerable behavior!

That is so sad. This is probably the same case that we were discussing in the chat room about a month ago. If so, this is a person that is (was) very active in the orchid community in South Florida. The only motivation for that kind of thing is greed. Smuggling of so many things happens down here. Birds, reptiles, plants, illegal drugs, even people. Usually smugglers have no care for the things they transport and many times they die in route. The only way to stop the smuggling is to only buy from reputable vendors that can guarantee where their plants and animals came from. Otherwise we are part of the problem, too.

I've seen (personally) the equivilant here in Michigan with stealing native terrestrial orchids such as Showy Ladyslipper Orchid and Yellow Ladyslipper. One day there, next day just holes in the ground.

A friend of ours was traveling in Peru and was hiking a trail. On the way up he saw a beautiful orchid display, which was gone on the way back. Someone had to steal it.
What happened to the orchids? If they caught it at the airport, they tend to confiscate and destroy.
