seeds! They acquired seeds from somewhere (most likely the strand) and grew them in flasks. 1 seed pod has 10's of thousands of seeds. A good flasker can get around a 80% yeild from 1 seed pod. Thats a lot of ghost's. I for one have NO problem with this, because it may keep someone from taking them from the wild.

Dave some orchids have obvious seed pods, but where are the seed pods on the ghost? How would they be collected?

I'd be more tired from the Orlando to the Fak trip.Just thinking about it makes me want to take a nap. Im sure she'll do fine though. It's definately something everyone who loves orchids should experience at least once.

Are you talking about me? I can make the hike!!! I can't say I won't be dead tired at the end of the day though...And the creepy crawlies don't bother me, I just try to stay away from anything venomous or posionous.
I was thinking that whenever we plan to take the trip, I could drive down the night before and stay somewhere overnight. I woudln't want to drive through the night and then go hiking! Just the thought makes me ache...or maybe that is lack of sleep this week!
Anyhow, I am really excited thinking about the opportunity to hike through the Fakahatchee strand. It will probably be a few weeks until I get everything together enough to do it, but I will start planning soon.
I will, of course, only observe. Nature left alone is an amazing thing, I wouldn't want to distrub that.
What do you wear (clothing wise) when you guy go?

Joe the Ghost grows a seed pod just like the rest. After pollination it produces a long slender seed pod on the end of the spike. Heres a plant that has all the phase of flower growth on it Flower,Bud, newly pollinated flower and old seedpod that has released it seeds.

Jenn, light weight long sleeve shirt and long pants with boots is a good start. I usually have with me a couple of bandannas, and a light weight pair of gloves, packable food (powerbars, peanutbutter sandwich) and I take 2- 24oz. water bottles frozen. I also wear snake protection but you may not want to invest in them for one hike so I would stay behind or walk the same path as someone how does. It is truly one of my favorite places in the world. You will love it.

Dave, that's awesome, amazing that's all happening on the one plant.
Jenn, some people wear shorts and t-shirt, to long sleeves and jeans, boots. But EVERYBODY wears the juice. Off, Repel, whatever you pick as long as it has deet as an active ingredient.
