Yep that is an orchid! Calypso bulbosa var. americana also known as the Eastern Fairy's Slipper. Nice find!

Finding orchids in the wild is always a thrill.

When we were in France last summer, we climbed a large hill to visit a castle built by Richard the Lionheart.

Castle? Who cares? Did you see all those native orchids?!?!?!
