A lot has happened since my last post! All of the yard orchids are now up (though most aren't blooming yet). I just saw the first bloom of the year though!!! Calypso bulbosa var. americana

I need those in my yard! You know that feeling of those movies where they make virtual worlds that we would love to reach and go to ...... that feeling.
Certainly a privilege to be able to see a photo of an orchid flower like that - those Calypso bulbosa ones. It is what dreams are made of!

I have worked out some plans for this summer, I will probably make a new thread for it as they won't be in my yard, but with any luck I will see all of montana's native orchids this season.

The Calypso bulbosa are all in full bloom now! Or at least they were yesterday, it is snowing currently so I suspect they might be buried right now.
This one is C. bulbosa var. americana I will try to post some pics of the hybrid nothovar. ×kostiukiae later today.

I found the first blooming Corallorhiza striata yesterday! Many more are on the way, it seems to be a good year for them.

I have around 32 acres, which is small enough to be manageable, but big enough to have habitat for a nice variety of orchids. I spend a LOT of time walking around, but I still find new things every time! I even found an entire species that I had somehow missed the last 4 years I have been orchid hunting, and it was a big patch next to the trail. They are just about to bloom so you will get to see pictures soon!
