Dendrobium Super Model 'Platinum'

This is my first ever Dendrobium. I've had it for a year now. It had about ten flowers last year when I bought it, and I don't even know how many are on there now, but it's a lot haha. I'm kind of impressed by how many blooms it has, and how nice they are. I don't feel like I did anything special; it must just like the weather here. It was outside in almost full sun from April until nearly December.

Everything I've read said that these plants should have a dry winter rest while they are between the growth and flowering phase, but mine never stopped growing, so I never stopped watering. The new growths start before the previous canes are even completely hardened, and it has had two new growths from every single cane. It produced two sets of canes (two, and then four) last year. I watered it less when it was outside in the fall, but only because it dried out more slowly. It never appeared to be at rest.

The flowers are much more pink than they were last year, and it has a lovely fragrance. I didn't notice any fragrance last year, but it's quite strong now.

This is a Dendrobium nobile hybrid. There [was] detailed care information on the Yamamoto Dendrobiums Web site. To be brief, in order to flower they need cool winter temperatures, not a dry rest. And no fertilizer after mid-late summer. You gave them what they needed.

Yamamoto Dendrobiums in Japan hybridizes and produces a great number of these plants. Their Web site formerly had excellent growing information for hobbyists. Unfortunately it is no longer there. You can still look at the varieties they grow, and maybe see one very similar to yours.

Yamamoto now has a page showing how to force Dendrobium nobile for Christmas flowering in Japan's climate. There is a lot to learn from that page, but it is intended for growers who can artificially heat and cool their greenhouses during off seasons. Note they use coconut husk for growing medium, which many orchidists would say retains too much water for orchids. For many orchids that is correct, but this is a very thirsty orchid.

The nobile Dendrobiums put on a great show when they bloom. This one is extremely well flowered. I just wish they didn't get so darn tall. Too big for my present growing conditions.

How tall is too tall? Know this situation all too well. I tend to collect mini-orchids because of my space limitations, though I do have some larger and taller plants.

There are some of the nobile types that stay shorter than others. If you happen to attend a show and see one you like, inquire of the vendor just how tall it is likely to get.

Is really nice and beautiful...I have my Dendrobium Frosty Dawn for 2 years now. Growing under light and inside a tent. The first year, only one matured cane with about 15 flowers. This year...I have 2 canes growing at once and they are now matured. Give them few weeks, these 2 canes would too burst out tons of flowers. I am amazed that your matured canes still have their leaves intact. My first cane from last year was already dropping leaves trying to adjust the new growing environment. This year with the new matured 2 canes..they are all largely intact. The lower leaves are slowly turning yellowish as the canes beginning to grow spikes....

Wow that's beautiful! I don't think I've ever seen some one rebloom a nobile Den in such a spectacular way. The cane on the right is so covered in flowers that the cane itself can't even be seen!

Holy Cow, I'd say you do need more of these Den's. They like you.
