Insecticidal soap kills aphids, as does 70% isopropyl alcohol. You have to be persistent.

As an added bonus, neither is good for cats.

Aphids. Those little sap suckers! The problem with spraying anything on flowers/buds is it can damage them. If the buds are completely closed and in early development, it is probably okay to spray. To get rid of aphids, many people put water into a spray bottle, add a few drops of Dawn dish soap and spray the plant with this. Systemic is a good long term preventative. If you have had aphids, it is good to clean the plant off and then use the systemic to keep them from returning.
I nearly bought this for the orchids when I had the mealy bug problems as it looked interesting. I worried about the fertilizer being too strong:
Amazon.com : Bayer Advanced 701710 2-in-1 Insect Control Plus Fertilizer Plant Spikes, 10-Spikes : Insect Repellents : Patio, Lawn & Garden from the water.
When I discover a badly infested plant, I spray the plant down with olive oil, let sit overnight, then wash with soapy water. It is messy so I tend to use this as an emergency option. The plants stay clean for quite a while after.
Good luck!

Epidendrum ellipticum from Andy. I take credit for the blooms.

Maybe I'm off topic or missing the point or didn't read a post or something but I guess I thought the initial problem was aphids. And I suggested Bayer three-in-one insecticidal spray. It is systemic and it does not have fertilizer in it. I've never had the problem of insects on any of my orchids, but I have several ivys and a few others I call regular house plants that have over the years had insect issues. and it's always done very well for me. Apparently it's very safe to use but anyway maybe I'm off topic- just trying to help.

The original post was a bud watch for several of my plants
The day after I gloated, I was rewarded with a hatch of aphids, which I have since dispatched. That got us off topic.

Epidendrum ciliare
I know this now goes by Coilostylis Cilare. Anyway,
I promised pictures when it opened. I just love the dove like quality of this flower.
