More Bloomers
Been busy with other things recently.
Plus, it had cooled off and began raining the last couple weeks.
Which it is still doing.
It did dry out and warm up for a couple of days a couple of days ago, which allowed some blossoms to open.
This Schomburgkia Schultzi 'Old Sherry' X C. leopoldi 'SVO', because of the cooler temps, opened up very slowly and it took the ruffles on the petals a long time to form. They may not be fully formed yet.
It is very nicely and strongly fragrant.
I mounted it low enough that I need to stoop over a bit to get my nose into it.
I had thought that I might lose it right after I first mounted it.
A fungal type infection took almost all the back bulbs.
Only the first and last PBs were left.
It did send out a new growth that has now blossomed inspite of everything.
This NoID Oncid also opened up on those two warmer days.
Then, this NoID Odonto also made its appearance when the sun came out.
This is the "black" one I mentioned elsewhere that lightens up as it ages.
It also gets the tip of the inflorescence broken off every time it blooms.
This is the most flowers it has made since I mounted it.

I'm not really against sending you some of our rain.
It rained HARD all the night before last and yesterday.
Our 10k gal. catchment tank floweth over.
To keep air circulating through the house we sleep with the outside doors open.
Kept waking up to the sounds of torrents of rain coming down.
When it gets like that, I start wondering if I'll need to build an ark.
The flash flood warnings didn't expire until last night.
If I remember right, it was coming down about 2 to 3"/hr for much of that night and day.
But, I'll still take that over 50 below, whiteouts and blizzards.
Been there.
Done that.
If memory serves me, when that "black" Odonto" lightens up, it gets some of the Odonto hybrid type patterns on the petals.
if it does, I'll post an after photo.

Awesome blooms especially the Odonto, wow! Must be a real thrill to walk outside at your home, rain or shine. Gorgeous blooms everywhere. I hope you won't need that ark but ya, sure beats freezing temps and snow.
I throughly enjoy fall, but dread the winter. Thanks for sharing your dream yard.

I lived in AK for almost 35 years.
I loved it.
I also thoroughly enjoyed the winters, cross country, back country and telemark skiing, along with multiday glacier trips. Then there were the summer activities I also thoroughly enjoyed.
I still miss AK a lot.
But, I'm now in my 70s and just can't deal with the cold like I used to. My winter activities were being severely curtailed by my lower energy levels. It was time to go somewhere I could play outdoors the year round, voile, Hawai'i.
Hawai'i is a good place and suits me well, almost as good as AK.
Plus, I always fantasized about being able to grow orchids outside, not just in my living room.
That's what brought me here.

Say thanks, we had a little rain last night. Well I could do without the blizzards also but it does keep some of the people away. I've never been to Alaska but seems most people love it when they go there. I have been to Hawaii once a long time ago. It's beautiful there and some day I would like to go back.

Yeah, I sent the rain over to you so that I could have a dry day yesterday. I went and did the Upper Mauna Kea Road, an almost 40 mile very primitive serious 4wd trail that circles around Mauna Kea at elevations between 7k and almost 10k'. Every time I got out of the car and did any moderate exercise, I'd get light headed. I may need to get me an oxygen bottle if I want to do anything up on that mountain. It's even worse up on top at almost 14k'.
Back to orchids, I just noticed today that my Dendrochillum magnum is beginning new inflorescences. Flower tassels will be forming soon.
The black Odonto is starting to lighten up. I can see the beginning of patterns on the petals and sepals.

Well, it's not done with its color change yet.
But, I think I'd better post a photo now.
It may not be here tomorrow.
And, I'll probably be busy with cleanup and repairs for a while.
Madeline, the first of two hurricanes within a few days of each other, arrives tonight and will be here all day tomorrow and tomorrow night.
It is being forecast to hit us hard, much harder than Iselle did.
Then, Lester should be here by the weekend.
It will probably not be quite as bad.
Happy Labor Day.
And, I thought Alaska was exciting!
We'll probably lose power, phone, i-net, etc, all the wire fed utilities for a while, 6 days for Iselle and this could be longer.
Plus, the roads will probably be impassible for several days.
Got the generator all checked out and up and running.
We can get by quite nicely.
Anyway, here is this morning's photo:
The Odonto type patterns are beginning to show now.
The color should continue to lighten up.
It's been a while, so my memory is not clear about just how much of a change there will be in the end.
But, I do remember that I was very surprised when I compared before and after pics of its first blooming 3 years ago.
I can't locate those photos now.
I've burried them some where.
I'm really good at putting things safely away, and ending up hiding them from myself.

I was searching for pics of pendant Dendrobiums and found the pic of the Black Odonto I took when my jaw hit the ground
Now you know why I rave about it. I've never seen anything like this before.
