Phal Sugo Yukidian (Taisuco Kochdian x Yukimai)
Hey everyone,
This is the orchid that got it all started for me about 5 years ago.
It's in full bloom right now, pushing new leaf and roots! Normally blooms from May to August.. It's potted since last year in a glass vase. Love seeing that root system!
Hope you enjoy as much as I do :-)

Gorgeous. How does the media in your jar breathe?

Thanks! It all started as an experiment, I loved seeing the roots growing and thought glass would offer a clearer view! The glass vase is 8in deep by 6 in circumference. At first I had no drainage, but roots didn't go down to the bottom. I have about 3 inches of lava rock at the bottom then coarse bark chunks for the rest which allowed sufficient air in the pot. It worked well until the end of it's growing season and roots had dug down to the very bottom. I would tilt it to remove excess water but that wasn't really efficient, especially when you have 3 or 4 spikes full of huge flowers... I decided to take a chance and try to drill a few holes, 4 at the bottom for drainage and 2 in the sides for added ventilation. It now drains freely from the bottom and dries fully within about 10 days. I mostly water with a spray bottle to avoid over watering it as it doesn't dry as quick as smaller pots, but still has sufficient air circulation due to the large chunks of bark, there's lots of pockets of air, but also retains high humidity. Seems to work well for me. It grows 3 leafs per year and 1 new spike in the fall. All the spikes above healthy leaves remain viable and push out new spikes from older nodes. I currently have 6 spikes growing off 3 older spikes plus the new spike from this year! Normally get 7 or 8 flowers per spike, should be a show stopper this year! Seems to like it's habitat! Attached pictures of what it looks like now, you can see the holes I drilled.

Now that makes sense to me, you drilled the glass. Thanks for the response. Great work!

Yeah I don't think one can grow orchids in a glass vase with no drainage... I know people do it for "show" but I personally do not think it's sustainable in the long run, unless you are always extra careful and only provide mists with spray bottles... I was at a westin hotel this weekend, they had orchid arrangements everywhere, all in glass vases, with no drainage. It looked nice but you could see that either the plants were way too wet or way to dry.
If ever one is interested, instead of glass I'd suggest plexiglass... you can drill holes easily with a simple drill bit, much easier then true glass that is really a pain in the @$$ to drill through. I need to repot this one maybe next year... it will be interesting to find its next home, I'll need something fairly large to accommodate that root system!

But you know what, I'm glad you drilled it because the glass vase adds to it's elegance.
