Dendrobium Angel Kisses

This is Dendrobium Angel Kisses, Ise 'Colorful' x Angel Baby 'Newberry' AM/AOS. The flowers opened yesterday. They are about 2" / 5cm across and a little less tall. The plant grows upright, and is 7" / 18cm tall from the top of the pot. Two photos were taken in sunshine, to show the sparkliness. The third was taken in bright shade, the better to show the color.

It came to me in October 2015 in a 2.5" / 6cm pot. It is Carter & Holmes 9615. The growth with these flowers was mature, but there were no buds showing.

The plant is making two more growths right now. There is plenty of room in the pot for many more growths. This would be a great windowsill plant, occupying very little space.

It has a faint lemon dishwashing soap fragrance. Perhaps that will strengthen with time.

I only have one dendrobium- but looking at pics like this makes me reconsider that😎 Except I dont think the one I have bloom very often😜 I have read they need colder nights, so maybe I'll remember that next year.

And fragrant aswell- lemon sounds like a fresh and nice fragrance for spring. Really nice color aswell😃

Helene! You can bloom small Dendrobiums in your home.

From my reading, there are a lot of Dendrobium species and hybrids that do not require cooling to bloom well. Some of these species need a reduction in winter watering, and others can be receive the same culture all year.

Hybridizers are aiming for small plants that bloom several times a year, and do not require cooling. Many of these hybrids are small plants that fit easily on windowsills. One group of such hybrids has ancestors in the Latouria and Formosae sections of Dendrobium; another has only Formosae section species as ancestors; another group has D. moniliforme and D. nobile ancestry.

D. aberrans and spectabile are small and very large members of section Latouria. Latourias generally prefer even conditions all year with no temperature change, and not much change in watering frequency. Many of the hybrids bloom throughout the year. Some hybrids are very large plants, but others are quite small. D. Microchip is one such hybrid. Many Latouria species and hybrids are fragrant.

Formosae section species such as D. formosum, lowii and tobaense are sometimes said to be challenging to grow, but their hybrids are said to be easy to grow. A lot of Formosae and their hybrids are fragrant.

My plant has D. moniliforme and D. nobile in its ancestry. The aim is to produce nobile style flowering without a cooling requirement, and many of these hybrids have lost the cooling requirement. They tend to bloom multiple times per year. Some are large plants, but there are others that bloom when small, like mine.

Everybody has room for D. laevifolium, a miniature that can bloom several times per year. Wintergirl taught me how to grow it here. Mine is making new growths now.

Here is another small dendrobium that does not need cooling. It is Angel Baby 'Love Pocket', related (a sibling?) to one of the parents of estacion seca's plant. It is not in bloom at the moment, but I think the blooms may be smaller than his. It is very generous in it's blooming!

In my climate, SF Bay Area, it spends the summer outside, but I bring it in when the temperatures go below 45 degrees or thereabouts.

what beautiful colors coming out of that den, seca... really nice.

Always like the Ise hybrids but afraid to get them as moniliforme, one of my fav orchids, drives me nuts with issues (I think they need consistently high humidity that i can't provide), but with your valuable info I have that one, angel baby, ala fishmom's recommendation, and it's related offspring to try.
