New York Botanical Gardens (Photo Laden Post)

Hey guys! i wanted to share the pics I took at the orchid show at the New York Botanical Gardens on March 24th!

I was in heaven! This was my first visit to the gardens and my first time to an orchid show!!!!! I hope you enjoy

Also This was my first real excursion with my brand new Canon T3i DSLR so let me know what you think about my shots!

It looked like you were the kid let loose on the candy store....
You got lovely shots of the blooms....
I was also there but I didn't bring a camera....
I was busy getting tips and learning about the culture of the plants to add to whatever I am doing now....
I also noticed that I own five of the orchids I saw there ....but of course they have large specimens....

I just got home from the NYBG orchid show and although the show is floriferous, as a serious hobbyist, I was disappointed.

Many of the “specimen” plants are made up of several pots placed together and covered with moss to look like a single plants - I confirmed this with one of the volunteers present. I was also surprised to see how many orchids were not labeled at all. The large signs that indicated a particular genus of orchid where not near what they labels and were on occasion misleading. I saw many orchids in the exhibit that had labels in the pots that indicated they were from Waldor or Parkside orchids. The orchids in the shop were priced on the high side. I think you can do better ordering from Waldor or Parkside directly.

I think that you can learn as much, if not more, from a local orchid society show. Certainly the labeling is much more prevalent, and the vendor selection is much more interesting and better priced.

I agree with you. The only thing in the shop worth the money was a paph delanatii var alba that was double bloomed in the shop! I wanted to get it so bad but I didn't have 50$. There were phal hybrids there that I see at my local greenhouse for 25-35$ that were being sold for 65. I was hoping there would be more species represented something really exotic instead of all the hybrids at the show. I love parkside orchids!!!!!!! I'm planning. Visit there next!

That said I'm looking forward to my next real orchid show! Now that I've had. Taste I am hooked on them! I had such a great time!

I went back the other day and saw three white delenatii. They also had lots of miltoniopsis, which I didn't see any at my first visit weeks earlier.
I liked one dark red miltoniopsis but didn't make my mind. well, someone picked it up by the time I made up my mind. lol

I also wanted one antelope dendrobium hybrid that looked stunning to me, but the plant was in bad condition, so I really had to hold myself back.

I took a picture of the tag showing the plant's name and where it can be found, so I am going to order directly from the grower.

Price is high. I plan to go back just for shopping though. lol
It is a rare opportunity for me to find some cute dendrobiums (if I get lucky enough to find one or two in healthy condition lol). if not, at least I come home with photocopy of the tag(s).
