Orchids in the consertatory

Finally! There are orchids blooming in the conservatory I manage at school! (All thanks to me, of course. )

I've been trying to get some orchids for the conservatory for about a year, and finally got some in last fall, mostly donations from the botany department greenhouse at school.

There are several others in bloom now. I'll have to take pictures on Monday and add them.

In order: Dendrobium Spring Dream 'Kumiko', Dendrobium kingianum, Phalaenopsis sanderiana, and Slc. June Bug 'Mendenhall'

Thank you, Joann and Silken. I hope they appreciate them, too. I've gotten a few comments on them already, but the horticulture conservatory is a little out of the way in a low traffic area. Still, I feel like I'm leaving a little legacy for future students. I'm trying to figure out who will take over care of the conservatory after I graduate in May.

Looks like the orchids really enjoy your care! I really hope that you will find someone to replace you, it would be a shame if they were to be neglected after.

My university used to have a small conservatory, and they had a lot of orchids in there (mostly mounted) that were all in terrible terrible shape. The Uni sold those buildings 2 years ago, the plants disappeared and I have no clue where they went.

Nice work and hope someone continues to take care of things. School greenhouses are notoriously difficult to maintain because of the turnover of students (and staff).

This conservatory was built the year before I enrolled here and the collection used to include orchids, but like the ones at your university, Camille, they disappeared in the move. Before I took over, there was a staff member of the university who cared for the plants as a volunteer. When she retired, I was one of the few people with the expertise and willingness to step in. Regardless of what happens, some of these plants will live on, as I've propagated them for my private collection and the Plant Propagation class uses many of these plants to practice and they keep whatever propagules they want.

NoID Phal, mildly scented




Aerangis calyptodon. That is what the tag says, though the closest I can find online is Aerangis cryptodon. I am hesitant to say that it is cryptodon, as the pictures online show many flowers open simultaneously on a single inforescence and this plant has never had more than 5 open flowers on one inflorescence at a time. Nice menthol fragrance.
