Default Today's Pics

Thought I'd share a few of today's photos. The subjects are:

Prostheschea cochleata - First time blooms under my care.

Noid Psychopsis - This her 4th bloom within the last 6 months.

Mymetonia Firefly - 2nd time blooming this year.

Noid Dendrobiums - This assortment seems to never stop blooming.

Bc. Nodata 'Maili' - Only two buds this time. She's a multi-season bloomer.

Sc. Egeria Coerulea - 3 blooms and 2 more buds waiting in line. One of these blooms displays an oddity with the dorsal sepal fused to the column.

B. nodosa - This one is trying her best to please, but night time bug activity (weevils and beetles) have destroyed many buds and marred many blooms. I've tried bug sprays and systemics but those methods don't phase them. I've found that spray craft adhesive works for spot treatments, but I get a bigger kick out of picking them off and squishing them.

Thank you. She was a gift from my daughter and I love her too. It took 1 1/2 years for her to bloom under my care. During that time she tripled in size and I did an in-pot division this summer. The division is complete but both divisions are still growing in the same pot. The back division also has a promising looking sheath. They should be growing in separate pots but it's now too late in the season to risk repotting.

Very very nice blooms! Looks like they're loving your shade house. A shame about the weevils/beetles getting to your plants though

Thanks. I posted the bug photo hoping Camille would see it and perhaps shed some light on it's identity. The other attackers are definitely weevils...Little Notcher and Sri Lanka type.

Hard to tell what it is exactly without a nice close up pic of it. I know nothing about FL bugs, so usually I can identify the general family from pics, then hit the internet or books.

Thank you, Camille.

Are you familiar with this bug? I don't really know what to call him...weevil...beetle or whatever. Little Notcher and Sri Lanka Weevils have been attacking this plant too. This bug doesn't look like them, but he acts like them...falls off the plant and plays dead, or falls to the ground and scurries beneath leaves. He also feeds during darkness like the weevils.

I've been having a terrible time with weevils for the last six weeks. Had problems with them last year too and I treated my yard twice for grubs this summer. Obviously, the treatment didn't work.

I read some articles about using beneficial nematodes and milky spore for grub control, but I don't know where to get that stuff. Would you care to shed some knowledge? I'm sick of these bugs!!!!

Thanks so much.

If the weevils are flying in from elsewhere, there's not much you can do except treat to keep them from reproducing on your plants. Depends how prevalent they are in your area.

If you can get a clearer shot of the other bug, I can try to ID it. I know that might be hard since it's noctural!

As was said earlier, wonderful shade house! I may try something similar next year in Jacksonville.
