Botanical Garden Rio de Janeiro - Orchid House

Hey OB folks,

I took a trip with the family earlier this year to Rio de Janeiro and fell in love with that city's botanical gardens. I could spend a weekend in the gardens - and an entire day in the orchid house, easy. They've got a huge, indoor/outdoor collection with one of the largest, nicest shade houses I've ever come across. If anyone is ever down there on vacation, I highly recommend giving yourself at least one full day. I might just be the world's worst photographer, so let me be clear that my pics do not do this place any sort of justice. I posted a few pics below to give you guys the general flavor, but please don't judge based on these snapshots.

I love that Cochleanthes in the first post, and the Vanda tricolor. Then again, all of the plants look well-grown and happy.

What a fantastic looking place. Those flowers look wonderful.

Yeah, it really is something special - I wish I could've spent more time wandering around. I went with a 2-year old and a 4-year old, so my attention was . . . multi-focused.

And this is just in one small far off corner of the gardens. The place is huge, varied and extremely well cared for.

It's a must-visit if anyone goes to RJ on vacation. Just be safe. It abuts a very sketchy area.
