Default Some new ones!

Well, the carnival came to town last weekend and of course I had to feed my addiction

In photos:

1. Cattleya Hawaiian Wedding Song 'Virgin'
2. Vanda Thananchi x Ascda. Tubtim Velvet
3. Phal. Sogo Grape 'Fireball'
4 & 5. Potinara Irene Fell 'Ruby Red'
- Sorry the photos are so dark on this one, I had to lower the exposure to capture the true red. This is one of the reddest catts I've ever seen, but doing a google and orchid board search for it I found absolutely NOTHING - anyone ever heard of it???

I also got a couple others, but they haven't bloomed yet...I'll be posting more later!

I love the Vanda, Ethan. Can't help you with the last one, I have to show my ignorance and say that I've never even heard of the genus - hybrid I assume from the ara ending?

Regards

Heather

Thanks, Heather! Yes, Potinara is an intergeneric hybrid consisting of brassavola, cattleya, laelia, and sophronitis (don't ask me how they came up with the name). Potinaras are quickly becoming one of my favorite cattleya hybrids...their flowers are just so stunning.

And you're not showing any ignorance...we tend to know most about what we have, don't we?? If you do a thread search on the board on "potinara" you will come up with quite a bit of eye candy, I'm sure!!!

Ethan, about how long does your vanda stay in flower and since are one of us "northerners" do you find that it takes alittle "extra" effort to care for it? I'd like to get some but living up north with low humidity and my GH temps as low as 58 at night sometimes I wonder????

Very nice picks! My sogo grape 'fireball' is in bloom right now. Just opened it's first bud this morning I can't wait for the smell to kick in. It usally takes a couple days. Can you smell yours?

Jackie - ummm...you're going to have to make and addition to your 'chid hotel soon, I think!

Howard - This is only my second orchid from the vanda alliance, I had good luck with my first so I had to get another and will be getting more. My first has flowered 3 additional times since I got it march, 2008 and is setting another spike now and the flowers last about a month and a half (it's an ascd. hybrid).

Since humidity is sometimes an issue for us northerners, I don't let their roots hang loose. I potted mine in an 8" wood slat basket with very coarse fir bark. I mist it every day and give it a good drenching every 2-3 days. It seems to be pretty happy with that so far. Other than that, I don't give it any extra care. In fact I did have some sphag. moss in the basket and had to take it out cause it was causing root rot. What's the avg. humidity in your g-house, Howard?

Mine has no smell, Nichole and they aren't new blooms!! I think sometimes when the culture is changed the smell can be taken away until it gets acclimated to it's new environment and blooms again. I've noticed this with several new purchases in the past.

I hope you start a new thread of yours with pics, soon. I'd love to see pictures of yours!

The smell on mine is very faint, and only detectable in the morning. But I think you're right, with a plant that has such a subtle scent anyhow, a change in culture could affect it. My specio-kingianum that I bought last weekend smelled great at the show, then nothing for two days after getting it home... now it smells pretty again! Fussy 'chids!
