Default In bloom now - 1

Here are a few miscellaneous pics of things blooming for me right now. They are from (left to right):
• Paph. wardii
• Paph. moquettium x greyi
• Cochleanthes amazonica, plant and bloom
• Zygopetalum Kiwi Geyser
• Stenoglottis Neptune (sorry, bad pic, but the best I could do).

Ed,

These guys are beautiful! Well done. I am particularly fond of the second Paph and the Cochleanthes.

I'm actually not to familiar with the Cochleanthes genre. What are the basic requirements for them? Warm, intermediate or cool temps; water/humidity...that kind of stuff?

Thanks!

David,

They are in the Chondroryncha group, with Pescatorea, Huntleya, etc. Each growth is kind of flat, fan-shaped. Just to complicate your search, if you look for one, the Cochleanthes has recently been reclassifies as Warscewcziella (I wish they would STOP all this re-naming). If you look for one, you should probably try under both names.

I grow mine in warm-intermediate temps (they are identified as intermediate growers). Moderate water, medium to low light (mine gets about the same as my Phal's.). Humidity in my greenhouse ranges 65-90 rh. They seem pretty hardy, mine have never been bothered by pests or diseases.

I got mine from Hoosier Orchids, so you are out of luck there. Santa Barbara currently has a couple of the genus, but not the amazonica. Oak Hill used to carry them, but I didn't find them on their website just now. Another place that has them, and a couple of other species as well is Orquideas Del Valle:

But they are in Columbia (South America, not South Carolina), and I'm not sure how easy it would be to get just one or two plants from them. You might try them, Andrea and Juan Carlos are very nice people and try to oblige if they can. Their website has a lot of interesting species, and is definitely worth a look in any case.

If you try to get one, I wish you luck. they are nice plants and bloom intermittently throughout the year. Mine is probably in bloom at least 60% of the time.

Ed

I really love the Cochleanthes. I just picked up an amazonica from H&R at a local show (my first plant of this genus) and its been flowering continuously for a few weeks now. Does yours have any scent?

Nice blooms!! I too really like the Cochleanthe. It's very nice. The 2nd paph is nice too. The Stenoglottis looks like the blooms are little tiny jellyfish!

None that I can detect. I have a "bad sniffer", but I had my wife check it out, and she says no too.

All very beautiful Ed. The Coleanthes flower reminds me of an old man with a beard. It's neat though.

I'm siting here trying to pick out a favorite from the group and I can't. They're all just gorgeous to look at.

Nice growing Ed!

Your Cochleantes is beautiful. I would be surprised if it is not fragrant. Mine take days to become fragrant.

Ed,

Thanks for the great information! It seems like they might do well here.

I have met the folks from Orquideas Del Valle at the Redlands Orchid Festival in Homestead, Florida, although I'm not sure if it was Andrea and Juan Carlos (it was 1 1/2 years ago). They have the festival each May, and I believe that they are a regular vendor there. I will add their site to my favorites, and contact them in the spring to see if they can bring one...or more. ...with them for me.
