Pteroglossaspis pottsii page updated.

As some of you may know, Pteroglossaspis pottsii is one of the newest species of orchids known to science, and it grows right here in Florida. I have had the privilege of visiting and photographing this endangered orchid in its habitat for two years now.

While previously on my site as part of a photo essay, I now have created the official Pteroglossaspis pottsii gallery page on my site, enhanced with new photos from 2008 (including an interesting greyscale treatment that I may do more of if it seems well-received. Fascinating flowers - do these open up more, or do they stay semi-open like that?

Nope...that is a fully open flower. The sepals/petals form a "hood" over the lip.

Very interesting. Too bad they are indangered.

Thankfully, they grow on protected state land, and are not that desirable an orchid to the average poacher. I predict that barring some sort of ecological disaster to the preserve where they reside, these will be there for many years to come.
