Default My Zygos Amanda is blooming!

I bought these (2) at a local nursery that because they had finished blooming and they couldn't sell them, threw them into the (as I call it) the scratch and dent pile. I bought them for $20, took 'em home and reported them immediately.

Well, they're happy and blooming well. Only downside is there isn't much smell.

WaterWitchin, yeah, I visit them every few weeks or so. As soon as the flowers begin to fade and drop off, they move their plants to the discount area. Sometimes they remove the name tags and other times they leave them in place. I have a helo sparkle with is sending a strong spike up now, that they "tossed" away a few months ago. It's worked out well so far.

I have Zygo Jumping Jack, one of the parents, and it is nicely fragrant so maybe yours will be more fragrant after a couple of days.

I know I have been disappointed with orchids I have bought
when they should be fragrant (fragrant species or seedling with fragrant parents/ancestors) and were not. Orchids are judged on appearance and not fragrance, unfortunately.

The same is happening to roses, too. Petal count, color and size are more important in judging than scent and it can be difficult to find the older, fragrant varieties.

A lot of the more recent Zygo hybrids lack fragrance. The process of breeding for other characteristics (such as size and color) often does breed out the characteristic fragrance. (Think of what has happened with roses) So enjoy it for the beauty that it provides, and forgive that one shortcoming.

The fragrance is only a small part of the overall experience on growing orchids. I enjoy them for who they are. I know exactly how you feel.
