My first cattleya in bloom

Cattleya jongheanna in bloom, looks so gorgeous with its velvetty pink petals.

Nice job! Just letting you know, when using the scientific name of any organism the second ¨word¨ in this case jongheana is lowercased, so the proper name would be Cattleya jongheana many people also italicize the scientific name, this is how they appear in scientific publications however it is not necessary.

Superb! Any care tips? I purchased one, to be shipped if it ever gets warm enough here! What I’ve read suggests keeping it cool…

I couldn't shake the feeling that your bloom looked like a rupicolous Laelia (yes, I know they're "Cattleyas" now!), and upon zooming in on your last photo, I see that it's a primary hybrid (Cattleya jongheana x Cattleya mantiqueirae). I love this group of plants! The shape of the flower and lack of ridges inside the lip were two indications it wasn't purely jongheana.

Thank you! No special care other than giving it sufficient light and water only when the media is fully dry. I heard from the grower that Catts dont like to stay wet and to water only when the media is fully dry. For this reason I used chunky bark media when repotting it. Temperatures in my house are on the cooler side 65-70F. I live in Seattle are so rarely it gets warm here.

Wow! you are indeed a very keen observer 🙂 You are right its a cross between jongheana and mantiqueirae. I just find the word mantiqueirae too difficult to read or write so just went with one of the parents with easier name jongheana😀😀 I just noticed it looked more like jongheana based on pictures I saw on the internet. I like the fact that its a compact grower thats what compelled me to buy this one. I was hoping that it would be fragrant but its not😥

Most of us go a little too far down the rabbit hole in orchidmania! Cattleya mantiqueirae, along with most other rupicolous Brazilian species, doesn't have a fragrance and this trait is unfortunately rather dominant in F1 hybrids. They make up for it in their compact size and absolutely stunning, crystalline flowers though!

This hybrid was registered as Cattleya QF Mantra by Quintal Farms in May of 2022. So you can just call it by its hybrid name, that way anyone interested in obtaining one knows what to search for.
