Looking for tmoney's response...

I use a piece of black velour (was a very cheap remnant from my local yard-goods store). It neatly hides shadows.

hey old man! realising that mental faculties diminish with age, ill try to make this veeeeerry simple

its a black cloth. bonus tip, use black fleece, as it diffuses way better than the cheap papery black drops you get with light kits

ok, i will stop with the old man jokes, i promise. in all seriousness, it is simply a matter of the cloth being far enough back, the lighting close to the subject (thus quite diffused on the backdrop), and of course using a macro lens (or push your stops down enough with a non-macro) which gives me a super small DOF, and therefore the black just washes out. edit to add a pro-tip: if you post process your images, it really helps to cut the noise. this isn't color processing, but in PS there is a layer called "curves", and you just pull the sliders in from both sides to where the image histogram starts. this really cuts down any noise in the background and really helps the subject pop. its a tiny adjustment that gives excellent results.

here is a video (sort of a first attempt at AMSR on our channel), showing the whole process...

oh, and it helps to shoot at night or in a dark room so that the only light is on the subject, not the backdrop. good luck!

I'll be watching your video today, but I don't want to hijack your thread with this. Thanks for your tips.
