Congrats on the rescue! Yes, you're right... you don't need to fertilize much. Orchids are slow growing and really efficient with nutrients, because of the nutrient-poor environment in which they evolved. The exceptions (and there are exceptions to every blanket statement that one can make about orchids) are the rapidly growing ones - like Catasetinae during the growing season (so fast that you can almost watch them get bigger), Cymbidiums (produce big growths in a season) and some terrestrials. They use fertilizer minerals to make new tissue, so if they don't do that fast they don't need much. For routine living and growing, the carbs they make by photosynthesis do the job.

hey ob! just a shout out to our plant caretaker for coaxing out some blooms while we were away. it’s nice to come home to a couple new flowers!

first is the dragon heart...and a first time rebloom. was kept at work and never fertilized. lesson for me...basically gonna stop fertilizing.

a couple of the phal ambonosa that rebloomed. i totally love the pure white on the flower stems. this is a cool hybrid





and the second flower opened on the bear king from place your bets on bloom time! my green pets, you never claimed your amazing prize package!!!



and finally, the paph maudiae vinicolors. i included these ina post on s/h about the difference in growth after putting one of the 2 in s/h. the other was moved over a couple months later, but the difference in growth is now quite obvious! the plants were identical upon transplanting the first one. anyone up for another edition of bloom time??!!

finally split open a couple days ago, and is stretching out! for any folks wanting to try paphs, these maudiea are really fast and easy growers. not completely black like i was hoping for, but still a pretty neat flower! now to figure out how to get those perfect paph blooms like we see elsewhere on the webs...

thanks, us too!! the heiro has bigger flowers than expected, and the plant seems robust and easy to grow.

This specific hiero has some of the biggest flowers I've ever seen in the species.
Too bad the form and colour aren't anything special, could've been awardable!

well, just cause they came from you they are special to us. ...

heheheh, but it also takes seeds easily, and there may be a second pod on there already. something that might augment (or hopefully improve) the color profile

some of you may know of my love for black flowers, and this is probly the darkest orchid flower we have had yet. also, perhaps because of the size/color/blooming habit, they seemed to pop out overnight! literally!

also, quite difficult to photograph, but here is a 15 image stack of the ones we found yesterday. the maxillarias are great, easy plants that are in the same culture and care as our phals, with just more light and a bit more misting.
