finally got a mini mark bloom to open, and hopefully by tomorrow it’ll be full on! one last one from the taenialis. im not sure if it will always do this, but the first flower drooped as soon as the second one opened....bummer, but interesting. maybe we can get some pollen!

well, as usual, i just sort of plowed in with my limited knowledge as soon as i perceived the window of opportunity. and of course, th8ngs didn’t go as planned. what i thought was the pollen on the taenialis turned out to be not the pollen? im not really sure at this point. i fiddled around on it more than i should when i only got little tiny whisps of things that didn’t really look like typical phal pollen. so, in desperation i of course transferee whati had to the mini mark...and then tore off the pollen and stuck it back on the doritis! ha...well, that was a mess. something is different obviously with the pollinia on the doritis. some of you may be laughing at me now, like yeah, duh. oh well, live and learn. after that horrible experience this afternoon, i found this article. may be of some interest somehow

well, i posted a few others as i went down the rabbit hole of orchid pollen, most of which focused around the pulcherrima. oh well, i found the stuff interesting and informative, so maybe you will like some of those article too.

still haven’t found what im really looking for, which are academic articles which explain the methodology of artificial pollination. all of these focus mainly on post development effects or morphology...which again are super informative, but not really what im after. oh well! i never did positively identify pollen from the taenialis. all the pictures im see8ng don’t replicate what i saw in person. so perhaps due to imperfect conditions or some other abnormality the flower did not produce pollen? i dunno...it would be nice to have more flowers so i could slice one in half and see where all the parts actually are on this one....

Human manipulation of pollination would be more likely studied in agriculture, not botany. Look in that literature.

interesting development with the taenialis today....it’s folding up in a decidedly different way than the last flower. granted we have seen a grand total of 2 flowers from this species, and only one flower fade...

im at about a 5% probability of a successful cross, but seeing this makes it a solid 5! im wondering if the flower isn’t just reacting to the stimulus, and a pollination doesn’t mean seed, i know. but man am i excited!

if successful....and we will try again, a daddy mini mark would be cool!

It seems some of the Phalaenopsis species have flowers that change color and texture but don't immediately wither after flowering; these just stay attached to the seed pod. Not sure if that's the case with this particular species...
