The reason that fragrance is not a general judging criterion is that it is so subjective, and also varies with time of day, temperature, light... it's a wonderful characteristic of orchids, but how do you communicate it to someone who isn't there?

I don't know if there are any orchids that smell like carrion flowers but I suppose if there are you wouldn't want to waste your time showing at that type of show.

Oh, there are some REALLY stinky orchids! Especially many of the Bulbophyllums. "Fragrances" like old sweat socks, or rotten meat. Fly-pollinated. Some of them even look like dead meat. (Bulbophyllum phalaenopsis comes to mind, but there are many, many others that are similarly aromatic) They probably would not win fragrance awards.
