Default My second phalaenopsis

I purchased this one here on impulse --- after walking past and spotting it - my second phalaenopsis. Not an online order! It had a nice serene relaxing look about it, and the size of the flowers are quite small actually. Smaller than regular mini-phal flowers I think. So quite cute too. It is a hybrid ----- cross between Jennifer Palermo and equestris.

Just sharing a couple of the nice pics of this one. The second pic has my first ever phal in the shot too.

Update: a couple of new nice phone-pics taken with flash.

Interesting how genetics work, I have a really hard time seeing anything else than the equestis.

Did they all look the same in the store?

Will do DeaC hehehe! I will be listening very very carefully to what you mentioned! I really did break the rules this year a few times ----- oh geez.

I had to remove a zygo that was sharing the pot dish with my first phal. So the two phals are next-door neighbours sitting on the same drainage grate - sharing the same pot dish. As for the zygo ....... currently now sitting in no pot dish ... I will likely have to put 1 more catasetum out into the 'open' (full sun) so that the zygo can be accommodated (with a pot dish). Real-estate is scarce in the growing area!!!!!!

MFN ----- there was just 1 there! I didn't know what Jennifer Palermo looked like until after reading your post about seeing equestris.

Then I looked up equestris online, and sure enough !!!!! ---- it really does look like flowers from the equestris side!

What made me buy this one was the cuteness of the very small flowers and also the shape and serene looking colours (combined with the shape). After seeing some equestris pics online ---- totally agree it does look like equestris.

I will have to take a closer look at the flowers later ----- closer inspection ..... as the sun hasn't come up yet hehe ..... at the moment, maybe one possible feature (maybe!) ..... is that equestris has prominent side-lobes on the lip. The flower in the pics (from what I can see) doesn't have those big side-lobe fins ...... and the lack of those fins could probably be due to Jennifer Palermo.

There may be side-lobes ------ but doesn't appear to be really prominent or standing out. Will check some more!

From that angle, the lip and lobes are very "violacea-looking". I wonder how next blooms will be like.

I'm not super fond of equestris, but I agree that their flowers can be very nice, depending on individuals. Orange ones are IMO the least famous and most original!

Phal lindenii is also a compact plant, closely related to equestris.

MFN .... sure is !!! Jennifer Palermo has violacea as a parent ------- so that trait without the equestris style side lobes may well come from violacea origins.

I'll take pics for the next round of flowering!!

Thanks for mentioning lindenii too! I haven't seen that one before, until a moment ago after you mentioned it. I saw some online pics of it now. I can see very prominent side-lobes on lindenii. Those are certainly features of lindenii and equestris.

UPDATE

MFN ------ I took a closer look at the flowers this morning --- and sure enough -- there are sidelobes.

These sidelobes are probably like the ones of violacea.

Instead of oriented as if open-arms (as in equestrius), the sidelobes of these flowers here are like both arms just facing directly forward ---- arms straight and pointing straight-ahead --- with palms of hands vertical. A sort of a sleek low-profile look. Maybe like violacea, while this flower is more delicate looking than most violacea.

Great choice on that spontaneous purchase. I had to look closely because it had that dendrobium look to the blooms.

P.P. ....... I see what you mean about a dendrobium look!! Nice comparison!

Coincidentally - I posted in another section about a dendrobium a bit earlier! ...... I noticed a growth coming off a Dendrobium discolor cane (stalk) ...... and it looks like a bromeliad thing growing from the cane. Not sure if it is a flower spike or keiki where the cells are trying to form a flower using the leaves. Looks like a pineapple top hehe.

At this link here.

Yes - so interesting. I see what you mean about the pineapple or bromeliad appearance! Are you able to revisit that dendrobium to see what develops or was it just along your journey?

P.P. ----- definitely! I will keep everybody posted about what happens. Hopefully that growth can just hang on - hopefully not just dry up or something later.

That dendrobium is one of my outdoor orchids. Other people may have seen the same sort of features before, but thought it would be nice to just upload some pics to share around. Thanks for checking out those dendrobium pics!
