You're definitely going to have things under total control after a short time Jeff!
Maintain a pretty good growing temperature for the leaves as well as the roots. Medium level lighting (for long enough duration each day) will work nicely for phals in general.
If you have 1 phal for trying out in a big pot, then you could try a fairly large pot (but not super massive haha) ---- with lots of nice drainage holes on the bottom --- big enough drainage holes for both drainage and air-movement. And use a media that won't become easily water-logged.
And then water the media mainly in regions outside of the main root zone ------ eg. towards the outskirts (rim regions) of the pot.
The inner region (toward the main root zone) doesn't need to be completely dry ----- or at least not dry all the time - so that the roots can still absorb some nutrients/fertiliser/elements hanging around in the media. But the inner zone can be made to be much less wet than the outter zone.
And - as usual ----- gentle air-movement ...... very gentle is just fine --- in the growing area. That can benefit orchids a lot.
If you haven't tried that approach above, then see how that goes - just for 1 plant. Maybe it will work well for you too.
