The plant was rootless when I bought it a year ago and just started producing new roots about a month ago. Since denphals are so top heavy, and it didn't have a root system to provide support, the cane needed extra support so it wouldn't fall over. Keeping it staked also makes the plant not move around as much in its pot when I pick it up to water it, so the new roots don't get damaged
