Looking forward to seeing it open. MIne is about at that stage too. Actually have a couple of spikes open. One of the cool things about this species is that the flowers tend to darken as they mature so you can start with light yellow flowers and sometimes they go to orange (but not always... have not found the pattern for reliably darker color)

Here are some pix of my plant. The first two pix are a spike that started opening on 11-18, takes about a week to get fully opened, so it has been open more than 2 weeks Golden yellow (lip is dark orange... photo not in great focus, couldn't get in position to really get the lip) Then the third is a spike that just opened at the beginning of this week, almost there. More of a light yellow green. The last is one that I took of the same plant shortly after I got it (bought it in spike) Really orange. It hasn't bloomed that dark since. (One reason I got it was the color) One thing I can think of is that I grow it outside, so when it blooms it's quite cool (always November-ish or later) It was greenhouse-grown when I got it, so much warmer. (From Cal-Orchid... they always have a bunch in bloom for late September or early October shows, that tend to be dark) I have hobbyist friends who grow this in the greenhouse and it blooms much earlier than mine. So I am sure that it would be happier if grown warmer... but it gets what it gets.

Thanks. I love the genus - so much flower power in a compact package.

I love how so many of her cousins have such pointy almost needle like leaves and magnum is just so big and soft and relaxed. Funny family dynamics lol

it is difficult to tell because of the lack of perspective but this is a LONG flower, or chain of flowers.
I thought this might help...I am 6'4" and can palm a basketball, my hand is not small
