LOL!! I will give it a go... if you can set me a task to try. (But you'll have to guide me in what settings I should try, as this whole conversation you've just had with GoodGolly has gone straight over my head!)

Very nice pics. I particularly like the P. Stuartiana. Do you know what the clonal name is. I would like very much to find one.

Shannon, set the menu settings in your D200 to NEF. Then give me a PM.

Default Some answers

Here are some answers to questions that were asked. This Phal stuartiana clone is 'Sogo' HCC/AOS. It was awarded on April 5, 1996 at the South Taiwan Orchid Show shown by the Sogo Orchid Nursery. I obtained this plant (actually two of them) from Carolina Orchids in Fort Mill, SC, owned by Tom Nasser and wife Shan. These guys are great. They mostly sell large mature plants of good breeding. They don't do many seedling size plants. Don't go there with as whiney personality. Tom is a tough guy and you have give it back to him. He likes that. He drinks good whiskey, too.

I am attaching another closeup picture. For those interested in photography this picture was taken on Mar 28 with a Nikon D200. The lens was a Nikon 105mm f/2.8 VR macro at f/5. The lighting was 3 off-camera flashes using the on-camera flash in "Commander Mode" only. It was blinded so that preflashes (which still occur in Commander Mode) did not alter exposure.

For those who might wonder why so much detail...I'm bragging about Nikon's "Creative Lighting System" which takes all the complexity out of flash photography. When I started in photography 40 years ago flash calculations were truly complex especially for multiple flashes. I was glad to be a engineer so I could even comprehend the calculations. With the "CLS" system there is no math. Set it and forget it. The camera does all the work.

Notice a couple of bad things about this pic. First the depth of field is only about 1/8 of an inch because of the long lens and wide aperture. Needs to shot at a much smaller aperture if my intent was to show the whole flower. BTW the focus spot is the base of the center lobe of the lip. You can see that the tip of the column and the apex of the lip is out of focus. That's my fault for being stupid.

The other problem with this picture is that there is no definition in the white areas of the petals. The pixels are not blown out. In fact they average 150 in that area. Problem is they are all in the 146 to 155 range giving a flat, undefined white area. I'm going to try more side lighting as Ross suggested to get more shadow detail in the white pics from now on.

Forget pic...see below
