Den. kingianum hybrids starting to flower

The first of my Aussie hybrids has opened its flowers!!

This is Dendrobium (Ellewong x Zip) x (Gillian Leaney x Tweed)



The rest of the plants will be opening in the coming weeks!! Yippee!

Gloria, I was hoping that it would develop some scent as the flowers matured, but I've not detected anything yet. I have chosen some of my kingianum hybrids solely because of their scent, but these ones came as unflowered seedlings, so I couldn't pick only those ones that were scented. Ah, well!!

Hi Becky, They orginially came from Woolf OrchidCulture in Australia (WOOLF ORCHIDCULTURE HOME PAGE index) through one of the (relatively) local orchid nurseries here in the UK who import them.

Omg, it's absolutely amazing!! I love Den. kingianum, but this is even better, I must have one! Looks like I'll be checking Burnham's website regularily to see if they will stock it again. Do these hybrids need a cool, dry bright winter like Den kingianum?

Hi Camille,

You could also try calling Burnham's, or sending an email - they were very responsive when I have had inquiries. They have many more plants than what they list on their website. Or... since this one doesn't have any scent, you could wait a bit, and maybe this one can be sent to you. I have two sibs of this cross, and I only intended to keep one. Just have to wait for the other one to flower to decide which one.

This is the first year that I have put them outside for the summer. Their new leaves went a bit red from the light, but the canes grew bigger and thicker and I didn't have to do anything special to induce flowering - except leave the outside until mid-October when the nights (and days) were naturally getting cooler. Five of the 9 plants were already in spike when I brought them back inside. I'm really pleased with the results of their summer outdoors!

Over the winter, they will be kept very cool and dry (watering will be reduced to once a month misting for those that have flowered, those that haven't flowered yet will get even less water).

Thanks Dana and Jerry!! Dana, this particular one doesn't seem to have a scent. Many of my kingianum hybrids have a wonderful strong scent that will fill a room.

Jerry, I think that these hybrids in general are some of the nicest orchids to grow. The combination of bright colour and heavenly strong scent, added to a tough little plant that isn't fussy about things is a winning combo. I really so like the colours on this one, though!
