Default Michigan Orchid Society Annual Palm Sunday Orchid Show

Is anyone here planning to attend? The show is at the end of the month, on March 28-29. This is probably the biggest show in SE MI, in terms of the venue's square footage, and the number of vendors, but that's just my estimation, and I could be wrong. I bought mostly supplies and a Masdevallia from Porter's Orchids last year. This year, I don't need much in the way of supplies, so I'll probably be looking for a handful of orchids from my wish list.

What about you?

I wish I was going but I'm not. If you are still interested in red Lycaste check with Russ Vernon. He has done quite a few crosses with the red.

I got a couple of flasks from him a few years ago and just bloomed one that is white with magenta spots on it. Last year I had a nice red bloom from a different cross than the spotted one.

That sounds pretty. I'll have to ask, then. While I'm aiming for a species, I will settle for a hybrid if I find one I like. Thank you!

By the way, is that a Phal. hieroglyphica in your avatar photo?

No it is Phal. tetraspis. Hieroglyphica is a much larger bloom than the tetraspis.

I don't think there are any red species. There are a couple with dark-er petals but they tend to be more brownish.

If you want a non-yellow species there are some pink or alba forms available. Don't be afraid to talk to Russ - he is a super nice guy and loves to talk.

Deep pink is mostly what I'm after. Mainly, I'm avoiding yellows, greens, and whites. I've seen some deep pinks that border on red, and it's very dramatic. They have an antiqued appearance to their colors, and I really like that.

Hieroglyphica has a bit of green and yellow in it, too, I think, but the bars looked similar, and it's hard to tell how accurate a photo is to life sometimes. I'm not familiar with tetraspis, but it looks nice.

To avoid confusion- the dark ones I've seen are possibly hybrids, but I never said I was looking for a red lycaste.

I"m so sorry I thought in another thread you said you wanted a red Lycaste and was mainly interested in species. Sorry for the unneeded information :>))

It's okay. I did say in another forum that I was mainly interested in species, but mentioned a deep pink. Maybe that made you think red, for some reason. No worries. Thanks for your helpful suggestions!
