Kaler's open house July 24th and 25th Male
Default Kaler's open house July 24th and 25th

I have no affiliation to Kaler, just posting this up.

I first noticed Kaler's Orchids via craigslist. He had a good variety and even some native Florida orchids. Never got the chance to see his new greenhouse, but I did meet him at the Redlands Orchid Festival. He was next to Sandy and Tom (Broward Orchid Supply)

Anyhoos, next weekend is his grand opening/open house. I'll be there on saturday.

He is located at 4425 NW 71st Street, Coconut Creek, FL 33073. He will also have a couple of other vendors there plus orchid supplies (Tom and Sandy??)

This is copied from one of his craigslist ads....
KALER'S ORCHIDS...OPEN HOUSE CELEBRATION!

My name is Kaler Westphalia and I own an orchid business, Kaler's Orchids in Coconut Creek, Florida. I recently moved my nursery to a commercial greenhouse of 30,000 square feet in March, 2010. We have been busy ever since organizing the orchids, but we are ready to welcome our orchid friends to an OPEN HOUSE this July 24th and 25th, from 10:00-5:00. Two other growers will have their orchids on display and available for sale as well. A wonderful palm tree nursery will supply some interesting products including bromeliads. A popular grower will display her unique, carnivorous plants, fly traps and the beautiful pitcher plants. She specializes in nepenthes with dozens of pitcher flowers. The baskets are 10 inch, and I have counted seventeen pitchers on one plant!

My orchids have been very happy in their new home. especially the cattleyas and the vandas. The paphiopedilums are starting to spike up as many are fall bloomers. We also carry specie and hybrid brassias, oncidiums, dendrobiums, encyclias, as well as angraecum, grammatophyllum, phals, and phais ground orchids. In addition, we now have wonderful orchid supplies available, great cork board baskets, potting medium, fertilizers, clay pots, hangers, and everything to beautify and perfect your orchid collection.

Custom made orchid arrangements will be on display. ORCHID MANIA, a charity for children living with HIV/Aids, will have a raffle. We will have fabulous hourly specials and several orchid societies will join us to celebrate our new greenhouse.

Kaler Orchids is a young business of only two years, but we have been well received by the orchid community. This year we were thrilled to be invited to several large shows, including two international orchid shows, Tamiami and the Redlands. I have grown orchids for a couple of decades, but the business itself is still in it's infancy.

Please distribute this email to all of your ORCHID BUDDIES. We will have an open house special, 20% off any orchid purchases over $35.00. This special does not apply to orchid supplies or other vendors. For those of you who cannot join us, please visit our website, Kalers orchids.com, to take advantage of our wonderful week end discount.

The nursery is located at 4425 NW 71st Street, Coconut Creek, near the intersection of Hillsboro and Lyons Road. At this intersection, travel north one block on Lyons, make a right at the very first street(NW 71st) and travel approximately 500 feet. The nursery is on the left. I have a Kalerorchids banner on the fence next to a large wood sign that says "Alley Farms". I am located in the large greenhouse to the right. If parking fills up, you can park along 71st Street or at the strip mall just south of 71st Street where Walgreens is located.

Put July 24th and 25th on your calendar. Please join us for complimentary refreshments and come enjoy the diversity and beauty of Kaler 's Orchids.

In Gratitude,
Kaler Westphalia,grower/owner

I met him at Redlands, too. He was very nice and had some really nice plants. I will plan to go on Saturday. Maybe we can get a few more OB people to meet up there. Fun, fun!

Getting ready to head up there. Wasn't sure what my plans were because of Bonnie, but she's gone and all's well.

I'll be the guy with casts on both wrists and a knee brace.

Sea ya there!

Brady, how was the open house? I was planning to go tomorrow. Is it worth the drive? Any pictures?

Also anyone else want to go? We could carpool.

Suzie, sorry I didn't get back to this sooner..

He did have some nice plants, it just seemed his prices were a little high.

He had some nice catts in bloom, but they were from $50-150.

I found a potinara (sp?) in all orange of which I've been wanting, but though it had multiple plants, there was no spikes on on it and he wanted $45

I've also been wanting a large alba form of our native Enc Tampensis, of which he had, but a small plant was $40. I saw a bigger specimen at the Redlands show for $30

And my buddy wanted another coconut orchid (maxilaria tenofolia sp?) and again, overpriced.

So, I didn't buy anything...

Well, I had nothing else to do, so I drove up to Kaler's Open House. Yea, not bad, but not a lot that I was interested in. However, you know me... had to get something. So I talked Kaler down to $45on a large Den farmerii and got a GIANT Onc Sharry Baby 'Sweet Fragrance' AM/AOS for $25 from Greenhouse Orchids. It is a beautiful plant with 5 giant spikes over 3 ft long each. 2 spikes not blooming yet. Hopefully he will be able to make a go of it there. The place was way too hot and many of the plants were cooked. The Ency tampensis did look good though, just he wanted too much and I have a pretty good one of those.

Sue, you're gonna be PO'd at me when I tell you this, but there is a park just on the other side of Lyons that has a bunch of Enc Tampensis there and it's in bloom now.

Also some Oeceoclades maculata on the ground too...

Awwww, shoot! Maybe I can ride back up to see them. Send me a pm with directions, ok? And exactly where in the park. Too hot to roam around out there too long. Thanks!
