The San Diego County Orchid Show will be held March 18-20 at the Scottish Rite Event Center. For southern California orchid lovers, a chance, finally, to indulge your addiction.
I decided to preorder plants from Ecuagenera to pick up at the show since most of the plants mailed to California have been... in rough shape. And I'm glad I did - this Sobralia virginalis was 12$ and in great condition. I could never find Sobralias that were cheap enough to try out... so very happy for the opportunity.
A gorgeous plant! Get it potted up ASAP... Sobralias don't like to dry out. (Actually, they also resent the bare-rooting process they have to endure for international shipping) Sphagnum at least for the first year or two is good, small bark if you don't like sphagnum. (Andy Phillips recommends sphag to start bare-root Sobralis, I have used it and had pretty good survival rate) And a bath of keipmax is probably helpful too.
Sounds good. Don't let it ever dry out. I treat mine as terrestrials - and so don't do much repotting, they seem to be fine even as bark breaks down, and pretty much hate repotting.
