Growing Orchids Successfully in Moss
via Zoom
Thursday, March 18, 2021, 6:30pm Arizona time.

(Right now Arizona is UTC -7. Arizona does not observe Daylight Saving Time. We are on Mountain Standard Time. Daylight Saving Time began today for most of the US. From today until late Fall we are on the same time as California, which is now on Pacific Daylight Saving Time.)

Carri describes her talk:
With so many orchids sold in New Zealand sphagnum moss, many growers are challenged by watering and potting. Thanks to the Taiwan growers' generous sharing of information, I’ve come to appreciate its amazing benefits over bark or other mixes, something I would never have imagined years ago, when we first started working with moss. I've been surprised at how well it functions for almost all genera, from Phalaenopsis to those you wouldn’t suspect, like Cattleyas, Oncidinae & Dendrobiums. I'll cover the basics of growing successfully in moss: Quality of the moss, potting, watering and fertilizing. I'll end with a great video made by a friend in Taiwan demonstrating potting and mounting orchids properly using this medium.
Carri's biography:
Carri’s involvement with orchids began over 40 years ago with her first Phalaenopsis orchid. She served on the Board of Directors of the Greater New York Orchid Society for over 20 years. She has served on several American Orchid Society committees, including the Education Committee, Membership Committee and Public Relations Committee. In 1990 Carri was one of the original "gang of five" who founded the International Phalaenopsis Alliance, Inc. (IPA). She is currently IPA Regional Director for New England, New York and eastern Canada. In 2004 Carri was honored with the IPA Award of Distinction for her contributions to the world of Phalaenopsis orchids. Since becoming an accredited American Orchid Society Judge in 1998, Carri has judged national and international orchid shows. She has traveled to Taiwan each year since 2007 to serve as an AOS Judge at the Taiwan International Orchid Show (TIOS.) She also served as a permanent member of the AOS/TIOS Coordinating Committee in charge of organizing AOS judging for this annual international show.

As a boutique commercial grower for 36 years, Carri focuses her orchid business, The orchidPhile, on being able to offer her clients the newest in cutting-edge Phalaenopsis species and hybrids, in addition to other orchid genera which grow happily under the same conditions as Phalaenopsis. Of increasing importance to her clients are vividly colored, heavy substance flowers that will provide them with long-lasting displays; fragrance; multitudes of flowers; and more compact growth and spike habits. In the last two years she has seen Taiwans increased interest in breeding some new intergeneric Phalaenopsis hybrids.
Individuals can join the DVOS, and watch all our upcoming 2021 Zoom meetings, by sending a check in the amount of $20 US, payable to DVOS, to:

Be sure to include your name, address and E-mail address for delivery of our newsletter and Zoom invitations.

I am trying to find out whether we have a mechanism for accepting credit card numbers for membership, which obviously would be a lot faster.
